PRACTICAL GUIDE · ND ORBIT
Do you need an agent or a simpler workflow?
Start with the task rather than the technology. A workflow that follows known rules has different requirements from a request that needs interpretation and a changing sequence of actions.
Talk to ND Orbit →Use fixed automation for predictable steps
If the input has a known structure and the next action follows a rule, ordinary software is often enough. Examples include checking required fields, routing an approved record and sending a scheduled reminder. These steps are usually easier to test without a language model.
Use AI assistance for variable information
An AI step may help classify an email, extract information or prepare a draft. The surrounding workflow can still be fixed: receive, interpret, validate, review and export. Adding one AI step does not require giving an agent control over the entire process.
Consider an agent when the next step varies
An agent may be useful when it needs to choose among approved tools or gather missing context. That flexibility introduces more behaviour to evaluate. Define which actions it may take, where approval is required and how a person can stop or take over the task.
Compare total effort, not just the demonstration
Include setup, review time, model usage, monitoring and maintenance in the comparison. Test difficult examples and failures. A simpler design that handles the actual workload reliably is preferable to a more autonomous system that creates additional checking work.
A useful decision checklist
Can you describe a correct result? Are the necessary sources available? Is there a person responsible for exceptions? Can actions be limited or reversed? If these answers are unclear, discovery and process design should come before implementation.
A useful next step
Describe the workflow, the systems involved and where your team spends time checking or moving information. We can discuss whether a focused discovery or pilot is appropriate.
